[plant morphology] tulip
Perennial herbs. Bulb ovoid, about 2 cm long, covered with yellowish fibrous membrane. Leaves basal; 3-4, banded lanceolate to ovate lanceolate, 10-21 cm long and 1-6.5 cm wide. Scape 35-55 cm long; flowers solitary, erect, 5-7.5 cm long; petals 6, obovate, bright yellow or purplish red, with yellow stripes and spots: stamens 6, free, anthers 0.7-1.3 cm long, base inserted, filament base broad; pistils 1.7-2.5 cm long, style 3-lobed to base, involute. Capsule, 3-locular, loculicidal. Seeds numerous, flat. The flowering period is late April.
It originated in Europe. It is widely cultivated in gardens all over China.

[chemical constituents] the flower contains cyanidin, salicylic acid and arginine. The pistil, stem and leaf contain antibacterial tulin a, B and a small amount of tulin C. tulin A and B can be partially transformed into inactive 6-tulin A and 6-tulin B after storage. The buds contained gibberellin A1.
[pharmacological action] it has been reported that there is a toxic alkaloid in flowers and leaves, and its physiological action is similar to that of cefotaxine. Tulip glycosides a, B and C can inhibit Bacillus subtilis. After the tulip juice passed through cation and anion exchange resin, it still had antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus. The alcohol extract from stems and leaves has antibacterial effect on Bacillus cereus myceides, and its active components contain many kinds of amino acids.
