Climbing shrubs. Stem stout, with axillary spines. Leaves alternate, papery, ovate or ovate lanceolate, 5-10 cm long and 3-6 cm wide, entire, apex acuminate, base cuneate, glabrous or puberulent below; petiole ca. 1 cm long. The flowers are terminal, usually 3 clustered in bracts, pedicel and midrib of bracts connate; bracts are 3, leaflike, dark red or purple, elliptic, 3-5cm long and 2-4cm wide, entire, papery; corolla tubular, light green, apex 5-toothed. Achenes 5-ribbed.
Native to Brazil; cultivated in China. The flowering period of Guangzhou was between winter and spring, and that of North China greenhouse was from March to July.
