[medicinal material] the dried deer tail is thick and short, slightly cylindrical in shape, blunt and round at the apex, slightly wide at the base, and irregular in cutting section. Those with hair are about 15 cm long, with brown yellow hair and some white hair; those without hair are short, purplish red to purple black, smooth and glossy, often with a few wrinkles. It is hard and slightly fishy. It is thick, black and bright without hair. Complete is better. Generally, red deer tail is better than plum deer tail.

It is mainly produced in Northeast, Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, Xinjiang, Gansu, Hebei and other places.

The hairy deer tail produced in Sichuan is the tail of white deer. It is 7-10 cm long and long oval or triangular in shape. The back hair is dense, dark blue, the ventral hair is sparse, gray white, and there are residual caudal vertebrae and skin at the base.
