Deciduous vines, stout stems; young branches purplish red, with woolly fine hairs and dark brown glandular setae; winter buds ovate, apex obtuse. Leaves alternate, ovoid, 10-20 cm long, several equal in width. The apex is 3-lobed, the base is deep heart-shaped, the edge is slightly serrated, the tooth tip is spiny, the top is dark green, there are sparse hairs or glabrous along the veins, the bottom is densely covered with gray or grayish brown villi, and there are glandular hairs on the veins; the petiole is 5-8 cm long, also densely covered with fine villi and glandular setae. Panicle, opposite to leaves, longer than leaves; calyx 5-lobed; petal 5: stamen 5, filaments inserted at the base of disk; ovary superior, 2-locular, style short, conical. Berries black, ca. 1 cm in diameter. The flowering period is from May to June. The fruit period is from August to September.
It grows on low slopes and wet places on both sides of valleys, and often spreads on shrubs. It is distributed in Henan, Shaanxi, Hubei, Guizhou, Sichuan, Jiangsu and other places.

Deciduous Liana. The branches are stout, yellowish brown, glabrous, the outer skin of old branches is flaking, light brown, and the young branches are densely covered with strong sharp thorns; the thorns are erect or curved at the tip, 3-4 mm long. The leaves are papery, broad ovate to ovate, 9-12 cm long and 7-11 cm wide, apex acuminate or short, sometimes with inconspicuous 3-lobes, base heart-shaped, margin serrate, teeth protruding, lateral veins reaching to the teeth, green above, bright, yellowish green below, sometimes with white frost, veins protruding; petiole 6-12 cm long, sparsely spiny . Panicle opposite to leaf, 10-15 cm long; calyx 5-lobed; petal 5, apical commissure; stamen 5, opposite to petal; disk separated from ovary, ovary superior, 2-locular, each containing ovule 2, style shorter. Berry globose, mature blue purple, diameter about 15 mm. Seeds ca. 5 mm in diam., reddish brown. The flowering period is from May to July. The fruit period is from August to October.
It grows in shrubs on both sides of hillside or gully. It is distributed in Henan, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Anhui, Yunnan, etc.
