[plant morphology] milkweed

Annual herb, 15-90 cm high. The fibrous roots are fine and dense. Culms tufted, erect or base geniculate. Leaf blade flat or convoluted, 15 cm long, 3-5 mm wide, glabrous or surface verrucous pilose; leaf sheath compressed, ridged, glabrous or sparsely verrucous pilose, mouth sometimes pilose; ligule ca. 1 mm long. Spikes, 3-10 cm long, 3-5 mm wide, usually several, finger like arrangement (rare 2) at the top of stem; spikelets with 3-6 flowers, 4-7 mm long, 2-3 mm wide; glumes lanceolate, 1.5-2 mm long, 2-3 mm long; lemma 3-3.5 mm long, narrow wings on the ridge; seeds oblong, nearly triangular, 1.5 mm long, with obvious wavy wrinkles . The flowering and fruiting period is from June to October.
