[plant morphology] amaranth
Annual herbs, 40-80 cm high, glabrous. Stem erect, less branched. Leaves ovate to ovate oblong, 2-9 cm long and 2.5-6 cm wide. Apex obtuse and emarginate, with small awn tip, base nearly truncate; petiole 3-6 cm long. Flowers unisexual or mixed, dense, green; spikes axillary, or integrated terminal panicles; bracts and bracteoles dry membranous, lanceolate, small; sepals 3, oblong or oblanceolate; stamens 3; stigmas 2-3. Utricles oblate, undivided, extremely shrunken, exceeding persistent sepals. Seeds brown or black. The flowering period is from June to July.
