Deciduous shrubs or small trees, 2-8 m high. Branchlets yellowish green, glabrous. Leaves simple, alternate; nearly leathery; elliptic lanceolate or elliptic, 7.5-14 cm long, 2.5-3.5 cm wide, base cuneate, apex pointed or obtuse, margin entire, glabrous above, short hairs on veins below; veins pinnate. Flowers unisexual, dioecious; 2-7 flowers in short pedunculated or sessile umbels; perianth segments 6, obovate oblong; pedicels of male flowers 4-6 mm long, covered with gray hairs, stamens 9, anthers 2-chambered; female flowers with staminodes 9; style about 1 mm long, stigma capitate. Drupe globose, ca. 8 mm in diam., black, glabrous. The flowering period is from March to April. The fruit period is from September to October.

It grows in the shrubbery or open forest on the wild hillside. It is distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hebei, Shandong and other places.
