[source] it is the root bark or stem bark of Sapium sebiferum, a Euphorbiaceae plant.

[plant morphology] Sapium sebiferum (materia medica of Tang Dynasty), also known as yajiu (compendium), Muzi tree (a textual research on the name of plants), Qiong tree, waxy tree, Hongmo tree, xuexuemu tree, Sapium sebiferum, Hongshu.

Deciduous trees, up to 15 meters, with latex, bark gray and shallow longitudinal cracks. Single leaf alternate, papery; rhombic to broadly rhombic ovate, 3-8 cm long and 3-7 cm wide, apex long acuminate, base broadly cuneate to obtuse, entire, both sides green, glabrous, turning red in autumn; petiole 2.5-7 cm long, apex with 2 glands. Flowers unisexual, monoecious; racemes terminal, flowers small, green yellow, no petals and disk; male flowers 7-8 gathered in bract axils, bracts rhomboid ovate, about 1 mm wide, apex acuminate, base on both sides of a kidney shaped gland. Stamens 2, rarely 3; female flowers at base of inflorescence, ovary 3-locular, stigma 3-lobed. The capsule is ellipsoid, 1-1.5 cm in diameter, brown when heated, with 3-valved ventricles and 1 seed per valvle. Seeds subglobose, black, covered with ash. The flowering period is from June to July. The fruit period is from August to October.

Wild or cultivated. Distribution in East China and Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Hunan, Hubei, Shaanxi, Henan, Gansu and other places.
