[plant morphology] Vitex trifolia
Perennial herbs. Rhizome creeping rooting, black or dark brown. The stem is erect and 2-type. The vegetative stem grows after the sporophyte withers. It is 15-60 cm high and has 6-15 ridges. Leaves degenerate, lower part united into sheath, sheath teeth lanceolate, black, margin gray white, membranous; branches whorled, medium solid, 3-4 ridges, single or re branched. The sporophyll is usually purple brown, fleshy, unbranched, with long and large sheath. The sporangium is terminal, obtuse, 2-3.5cm long; the sporophylls are hexagonal, shield shaped, spirally arranged, with growing sporangia on the margin. The spores are in the same shape.
Born by a stream or in a shady valley. It is distributed in Jiangxi, Anhui, Guizhou, Sichuan, Tibet, Xinjiang, Shaanxi, Shandong, Hebei and Northeast China.
[collection] from May to July, the whole grass was cut and dried in the shade.
[medicinal material] dry whole grass, about 30 cm long, similar in appearance to that of growing, but more than shrunken, or branches falling off. The stem is slightly oblate or round, light green, longitudinally striated, with long internodes and degenerated scaly leaves on each node, which are sheath like, with tooth crack at the apex and dura mater. The branchlets are dry and the tip is gradually thin. Base sometimes with partial roots, dark brown. It is better to be dry, green, without roots and impurities.
Produced in Northeast, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Jiangxi, Anhui and other places.
[chemical constituents] the whole herb contains Vitexin, equisetin, isoquercetin, luteolin, silicic acid (5.19-7.77% of the dry crude drug), organic acid, fat, β - sitosterol, equisetine, dimethyl sulfone, thymine, 3-methoxypyridine and many kinds of amino acids.
The spores contain pentahydroxyanthraquinone glucoside, octadecanedioic acid, triadecanedioic acid, dimethyl triadecanedioate, gossypioside and gossypioside.
(1) diuretic effect
The alcohol soluble components and flow extract of fresh whole grass have diuretic effect, but not strong. However, the diuretic effect of decoction was not confirmed.
② Impact on circulation system
The decoction (1:2) was injected intravenously into rabbits and dogs, which could cause the decrease of blood pressure and reflex respiratory excitement. The hypotensive components are soluble in water but not in alcohol and chloroform. A small amount of fresh water decoction can increase the contractility of isolated frog heart, but a large amount can inhibit it.
③ Other functions
It can be used to treat diabetes clinically, but it has not been proved by animal experiments. It has also been reported that it can be used as hemostatic agent in hemorrhoids and uterine bleeding. Equisetine is toxic to horse and harmless to human.

[clinical application] treatment of chronic tracheitis
72 cases were observed, 21 cases were controlled in the near future, 18 cases were markedly effective, 23 cases were improved and 10 cases were ineffective. The effect of relieving cough and eliminating phlegm was better. During the treatment, it was found that this product has a certain antihypertensive effect. Preparation and usage: 1 Decoction: 1 Liang (10 Liang system) of Herba Sarcandrae, add 600-800 ml of water, boil for 5-8 minutes, take separately in the morning and evening. It contains two tablets of 43.0 g each. Take 10 tablets three times a day.
