Perennial herbs, 20-30 m high. Rhizome with long nodule underground. It has three compound leaves, which grow on the upper part of the rhizome and have long stalks; the leaflets have no stalks, the leaves are thick and slightly fleshy, long elliptic, 4-8 cm in length and 2-4.5 cm in width, the apex blunt, and the edge microwavy. The flower stem is single, cylindrical, 25-35 cm high; raceme, white flowers, about 1 cm in diameter, long pedicel, with an ovate bract at the base; calyx 5-lobed, lobes oblong; corolla funnel-shaped, tube longer than calyx, lobes 5-oblong lanceolate, inner side densely covered with white villous; stamen 5, inserted in tube, anther black; pistil 1, longer than stamen, style erect Out of corolla, stigma trigeminal. Capsule globose, 2-lobed at maturity, containing a few globose seeds. The flowering period is June.
Born in swamp and shallow water area. Distributed in Northeast, Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou and other places.

[chemical constituents] the leaves contain about 1% Picroside, tannin and fatty oil. It also contains 0.035% alkaloids, from which gentianine, gentiopicine, ornitholine and Xizang longcholine are separated.
The whole herb contains rutin, Hyperoside, trifolioside, mucoside (i.e. soporioside), soporioside B, dihydrosoporioside B, soporioside A and kailian mucoside.
The aerial part contains α - spinasterol, stigmasterol-7-ol and other sterols. The main components are α - pinene, 1,8-cineole, solanese, gurrene, neronene, isovalerate, etc.
[pharmacological action] the decoction of leaves and roots can be used as bitter stomach tonic agent, and has the effect of purgation, which can induce vomiting in large quantities; the bitter taste is related to the content of Solanum lyratum.
