[plant morphology] amaranth

Annual herbs, 7-30 cm high, glabrous. Stem erect, 4-ribbed, often branched. Leaves opposite or slightly opposite, lanceolate, oblanceolate or narrowly obovate, 1.5-5 cm long, 0.2-1.2 cm wide, apex obtuse, base gradually narrowed into short stalks or sessile. Cymes axillary, short pedunculate, with dense flowers; bracts small, strip subulate; calyx campanulate, ca. 1 mm long, calyx teeth 4, equilateral triangular; apetalous; stamens 4, near the middle of calyx tube, as long as or shorter than calyx lobes; ovary spherical, style about half of ovary, ca. 0.4 mm long. Capsule globose, purplish red, 1-1.5 mm in diam., irregularly covered above middle; seeds numerous, small, subtriangular.

It grows in the fields and wet places on the roadside. It is distributed in Yunnan, South China and Qinling.
