[plant morphology] Ophiopogon japonicus

Perennial herb, stem height 20-30 cm. The roots spread underground. The stems and leaves are purplish red. Leaves opposite, elliptic lanceolate or ovate, 3.3-4.8 cm long, 1.6-3.3 cm wide, entire; petiole 1.3-2.6 cm long. Cymes inserted on stem tip; calyx 5-lobed, persistent; corolla tubular, apex 5-lobed, reddish; stamens 5; disk fleshy, annular; ovary inferior, 2-locular. Capsule inverted triangular. Seeds small, numerous. The flowering period is from June to July.

Born in the shade of mountain trees. It is distributed in East China, central China, Southwest China and South China.
