Evergreen trees or shrubs, 3-6M high. Branchlets dark brown, current year's branches angular. Leaves alternate, thinly leathery, obovate elliptic, long elliptic to oblanceolate, 7-12.6 cm long, 1.7-3.5 cm wide, margin serrate, apex acute, base cuneate; petiole 6-12 mm long. The flowers are white, fragrant, 4-numbered; the male flowers are 1-3 cymose florets, corolla wheel shaped; the sterile pistils are conical, apex obtuse. Female flowers simple 1, calyx cup-shaped, lobes ovate triangular, apex obtuse or rounded, 1 mm long, with sparse bristles; petals elliptic ovate, 2 mm long; sterile stamens shorter than corolla; pistil as long as corolla, ovary ovate, stigma discoid, 4-lobed, corolla. Fruit globose, stigma persistent, red at maturity, 6 mm in diam., longitudinally sulcate; 4 separate nuclei. It blooms in spring.
