[plant morphology] fenzi
Annual herb, 60-120 cm high. Culm erect, smooth, often branched. Leaf blade linear, 30-60 cm long, 5-10 mm wide, smooth below, rough or pilose above. Spikes 2-9, clustered at the top of stem, 4-9 cm long, often curved as chicken feet at maturity; spikelets with 5-6 flowers. Glumes lanceolate, apex pointed, ridged, ridged, coarsely winged, the first glume about 3 mm long, the second glume about 4 mm long; lemma ridged, narrowly winged, the first lemma about 4 mm long; palea with 2 ridges, shorter than lemma; stamens 3, anthers about 1 mm long. Seeds globose, ca. 1. 5 mm long, dark brown, with inconspicuous wrinkles on the surface.
It is cultivated in the south of the Yangtze River Valley in China.
