[plant morphology] ferula rigida, also known as sand fennel.
Perennial herbs, 20-100 cm high. The roots are thick. Stem erect, base with fibrous sheath, branched, pale. The leaves are mostly rhizomatous, glabrous, ovate to triangular, 4-20 cm long, 2-3 pinnately cleft, and the final lobes are wedge-shaped to obovate, 1-3 mm long and 1 mm wide, hypertrophic, divaricate, often 3-lobed, with coarse teeth or lobes; the petiole is 5-15 cm long, with short petiole and expanded sheath. Compound umbel; pedicel 15-30 cm long; without involucre or 1-2 pieces; umbrella 7-15, nearly equal; several small involucre, strip, as long as flower, rough or absent; pedicel many; flower yellow. Suspensory fruit oblong, 10-13 mm long, 3-5 mm wide, flat, glabrous; fruit stalk 12-20 mm long, lateral ribs wide, with corky wings. The flowering period is from May to August. The fruit period is from July to September.
On fixed sand mound and sandy ground. Distributed in Liaoning, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Shanxi, Gansu, Shaanxi and other places.
The seeds of this plant are also used for medicinal purposes.
