[plant morphology] Ailanthus altissima (qunfangpu), also known as Chou Chu (dietotherapy materia medica), Ailanthus altissima, humu (materia medica gleanings), Huyan tree (Sisheng materia medica), Guimu (materia medica tujing), Dayan Tung (compendium), Ailanthus and Ailanthus altissima.
Deciduous trees, up to 20 m high. The bark is smooth with straight lines; the new branches are reddish brown with fine hairs at the beginning, and then fall off slightly. The leaves are odd pinnate compound, alternate, 45-60 cm long; leaflets are 13-25, short petiole, lanceolate ovate, 7-12 cm long, 2-4.5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base obliquely truncated, slightly rounded, near base with 2 large serrations outside; there is an oil gland on the back of the tooth, dark green on the top, gray green on the bottom, and peculiar odor after rupture. Panicle terminal, 10-20 cm long; flowers small, green, hybrid, calyx short, 5-lobed, petals 5: male flowers with stamens 10, without pistillodes; hermaphroditic flowers and female flowers with short stamens; ovary composed of 5 carpels, style united, stigma 5-lobed. Samara long oval, light yellow green. The flowering period is from April to May. The fruit is hot from August to September.
It is distributed in most parts of the country.

The dry root bark is irregular in shape. It is usually flat and flaky, or slightly rolled inward into tile or reel shape. Its size, length and thickness vary greatly. It is 3-10 cm long or longer, 1-5 cm wide and 5-10 mm thick. The outer surface is yellowish brown or slightly light, rough, with obvious lenticels, extending longitudinally, protruding and slightly rolling, sometimes the outer cork is left, and the yellowish white cortex is exposed; the inner surface is light yellow to light brownish yellow, relatively flat, densely covered with regularly arranged punctate protrusions or punctate linear longitudinal protrusions, sometimes breaking into small holes. The fracture surface is not flat, the outer side is granular, the inner side is slightly fibrous, brown yellow. It has a smell of oil, strong after breaking, bitter and lasting taste.
② Ailanthus bark
The dry bark is thicker than the root bark and irregular, varying in size, about 1.5-2 cm thick. The outer skin is dark gray to grayish black, very rough and uneven, with cracks. Sometimes the cork is scraped off to expose the light brown yellow cortex. The others are the same as the root bark. The root bark and dry bark are thick, big, yellow white, without outer skin is better, generally used root bark.
In most parts of the country, there is a lot of production.
Ailanthus altissima (Ailanthus altissima) and Toona sinensis (Toona sinensis) belong to two different families and genera. However, in the materia medica of the past dynasties, every time they are described together, the Ailanthus altissima and Toona sinensis bark are often referred to as "toon white bark" or "Toona sinensis root bark" in commodities, because their functions are basically the same. [clinical application] ① treatment of acute bacillary dysentery
Take 1 liang of fresh Ailanthus altissima Bunge, fry it twice, mix the juice and take it twice, one day for adults. Systematic observation of 82 cases, 81 cases were cured. After taking the medicine, the fever mostly decreased to normal within 3 days, abdominal pain and tenesmus disappeared in 2 days on average (combined with Compound Camphor Tincture), and pus blood mostly decreased within 2-3 days, and then gradually turned to normal. 48 cases were followed up. The results showed that 2 cases recurred after 2 months and were cured after 3 months. Or use 100% Toona root extract, 10-15 ml for adults and 1-2 ml for children, three times a day before meals. For retention enema, the dosage should be 1 times larger than that of oral administration, and diluted 10 times with water. After treatment of 70 cases, 68 cases were cured and 2 cases were invalid. The average cure time was 6.3 days. It took 1.35 days for body temperature to reach normal, 2.4 days for diarrhea control and 3 days for stool to return to normal.
② Treatment of amoebic dysentery
Take 100 g of dried Ailanthus altissima Bunge, add water to 600 ml, and concentrate the decoction to 100 ml to make a 1:1 decoction. Take 3 times a day, 10 ml each time, generally 7 days as a course of treatment. The dosage and course of treatment can be increased or decreased according to age, constitution and condition. In severe cases, the daily dose was up to 60 ml, and there was no adverse reaction after continuous administration for more than 15 days. 31 cases were observed. After 7-24 days (average 8.5 days), 30 cases were cured and 1 case was improved (course of disease 20 years). 8 cases were followed up and no recurrence occurred in 6 months.
③ Treatment of hematochezia
