Annual or biennial herbs, stem 7-30 cm high, many branched. Basal leaves round heart-shaped, cauline leaves ovate oblong or lanceolate, serrate obtuse, long petiole; stipules large, base pinnate. Pedicel axillary, with 1-2 flowers, bisexual, symmetrical on both sides. The upper flowers open in spring, large and beautiful, about 3-5cm in diameter, each flower has blue, white and yellow colors, only a few seeds are produced; the flowers at the base of stem or close to the ground open in summer, no petals, closed flowers and fertilized, can produce most seeds. Sepals 5, base extended into appendages; petals 5, lower 1 larger, with short obtuse spur; stamens 5, lower 2, base with nectary appendages, extending into spur; ovary superior, 1-locular, ovules numerous. Capsule 3-valved, triangular. The flowering period is from spring to autumn.
It is cultivated all over the country.
