[plant morphology] annual herb, 25-100cm high. Stem erect, quadrangular, sparsely pilose or glabrous. The middle and lower leaves are opposite, the leaves are 3-7-deeply split to pinnate compound leaves, rarely the lower leaves are simple, the leaflets are thin, ovate or ovate elliptic, serrated or divided, the lower leaves have long petioles, gradually shorter upward; the upper leaves are alternate, 3-lobed or undivided, linear lanceolate. The inflorescence is about 8 mm in diameter and has long peduncle when flowering; the involucre is 7-8, spoon shaped, with fine soft hair on the edge; the outer supporting plate is narrow and oblong, and the inner supporting plate is narrow and lanceolate; the ligulate flower is white or yellow, 4-7 or sometimes absent, partially sterile; the tubular flower is yellowish brown, about 4.5 mm long, 5-lobed. The achenes are linear, dark brown at maturity, 7-15mm long, with bristles; the crown hairs are spiny, 3-4, 1.5-2.5mm long. The flowering and fruiting period is from September to November.
