Perennial herbs, 10-15 cm high. Roots stout, cylindrical, usually unbranched, skin pale brown. The stem is very short. The basal leaves are thick papery, broad elliptic, 9-11 cm long and 7-9 cm wide, apex rounded or acute, base rounded or slightly obtuse, margin irregularly undulate toothed or indistinctly lobed, both sides covered with pubescence and glandular dots below; petiole 7-8 cm long, densely pubescent, base inflated; upper leaves are smaller, with short petiole. Inflorescence terminal, 4-5 cm in diameter; involucre campanulate, 3.5-4 cm in diameter, involucre leathery, margin with short bristles, apex with small spines; flowers all tubular, purple, about 3.5 cm long, tube slender, crown hair 3 layers, all erect. Achenes glabrous, ribbed. It blooms in summer.
It grows in grass, shrub or sparse forest on hillside. It is distributed in Northwest Yunnan.
② Aucklandia membranaceus
Perennial herbs. The taproot is cylindrical and slender. The stem is very short. The leaf is oval or oblong, 10-15 cm long, 8-13 cm wide, apex obtuse or pointed, base gradually narrowed into petiole, pinnatifid, lobes with irregular wavy teeth on the edge, teeth with small spiny tips, both sides covered with strigose; upper bract leaflike, smaller, pinnatifid. Inflorescence numerous, diameter 2.5-3.5 cm; total pedicel less than 1 cm; involucre campanulate, diameter 2-2.5 cm; involucre 4-layer, lanceolate, sub leathery, margin membranous, entire, apex with cartilaginous spines; flowers all tubular, purple, about 3 cm long, tube slender, corolla all erect. Achene, upper part with nodules or wrinkles.
It grows in hillside grass or stone crevice. It is distributed in Northwest Yunnan and southwest Sichuan.
③ Dali Muxiang, also known as: Cai Muxiang.
It is similar to Aucklandia bodinieri, but the leaves are thin and pinnate. Involucral bracts leathery with brown membranous margin, apex obtuse or pointed. The corolla tube is 2-3 times longer than the eaves, and the receptacle has short subulate spines.
Born on hillside grassland. It is distributed in Northwest Yunnan and South Sichuan.
