[plant morphology] highland barley
Annual herbs. The fibrous root may have a sand sheath. Culms erect, tufted, about 60-80 cm high, usually with 2-3 nodes. The leaf sheath is loose, the basal one is often covered with micro hairs; the ligule is transparent and membranous, about 3 mm long; the leaf blade is flat, soft, 8-18 cm long, 3-9 mm wide, slightly rough, the base of the edge is sometimes sparsely ciliated, the panicle is developed, pyramid shaped, 15-20 cm long, the branches are angular, spiny, rough; the spikelet contains 3-6 florets, 2-4 cm long; the rachis tough, glabrous, often curved Lemma glabrous, herbaceous and soft, with 9-11 veins, basal plate glabrous, apex usually 2-lobed, first lemma 20-25 mm long, awnless or more than 1 / 4 of the upper part with an awn 1-2 cm long, thin and erect or retroflexed; palea very short than lemma, ciliate on ridge. Caryopsis ca. 8 mm long, separated from palea and palea.
It is cultivated in Northwest China, North China, Inner Mongolia and Tibet.
