The taste is slightly bitter. The best ones are thick and long, reddish brown on the surface, dark red on the inside, few divergences, stemless seedlings and few fine fibrous roots.
Mainly produced in Shaanxi, Hebei, Henan, Shandong and other places. In addition, it is also produced in Hubei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Gansu, Liaoning, Shanxi, Guangdong, Guangxi and Sichuan. Shaanxi and Henan had the highest yield and the best quality.
In Sichuan medicinal materials, rhizome with old stem is used as the same as the root of Rubia, and the commodity is called "Rubia stem".
In Jiangsu Province, the roots of the same family plant, Potamogeton pungensis, are used as substitutes for Rubia cordifolia, and the medicinal materials are called "Rubia cordifolia" or "Rubia cordifolia root". Its appearance is light in color; its cross section is yellowish white or light yellowish brown, and the thick one can see light brown concentric rings; when sliced, if soaked in hot water, the water will turn light yellow, and the root of Cynanchum wilsonii will turn light red.
