[plant morphology] pingpengcao (a collection of Materia Medica), also known as shuisu (compendium), pingpenglian, huangjinlian, shuiyideng, shuipingpeng and aipingpeng.
Perennial aquatic herbs. The rhizome is hypertrophic and recumbent. The leaves are floating, broadly ovate, 6-17 cm long and 6-12 cm wide, with deep heart-shaped base, bright green on the top and purplish red on the bottom, densely hairy and pinnate lateral veins; the petioles are hairy; the leaves born in water are slightly soft and thin. Flowers solitary at the top of pedicel, floating on water, 3-4 cm in diameter; sepals 5, leathery, large and yellow, elliptic ovate; petals small, mostly wedge-shaped, oblong, apical truncate or slightly concave, with nectary on the back; stamens numerous; ovary superior, stigma discoid, with 8-10 radial lobes. Berry ovate, base narrow; with persistent sepals and stigmas. Seeds numerous, miliaceous, leathery, aril fleshy. The flowering period is from July to August.
Born in shallow water such as ponds and rivers. Distributed in East China, South China, southwest, northeast and other places.
