Leaves twining vines, up to 5 meters high. Old branches glabrous, with small gray white lenticels; pith large, white, solid. Leaves alternate; membranous, upper half or all turning white or yellow; broadly ovate to ovate oblong, 6-13 cm long and 4-9 cm wide, apex acuminate, base rounded or cuneate, margin serrate, glabrous above and hairy below; petiole weak, sometimes slightly spiny. Dioecious; flowers usually single, sparse, 3-flowered, axillary, larger, 2.5 cm in diameter, white and fragrant; sepals 5, ovate elliptic; petals 5, obovate; ovary of male flowers without style, stamens many; female flowers stemmed, only, pistil 1, stigma many split, ovary smooth, bottle shaped.
