[plant morphology] Thalictrum PLATYPHYLLUM
Perennial herbs, about 1 m high, glabrous. Rhizome short, brown, fibrous roots slender. Stem erect, longitudinally striated. The leaves are large, 3-4-pinnate compound, 14-40 cm long and 8-30 cm wide; the petioles have short sheaths, the sheaths are ear-shaped, light brown and toothed; the leaflets vary greatly, they are broadly ovate, ovate or elliptic rhombic, 0.5-3 cm long and 0.3-2.5 cm wide, 3-lobed above the middle, round or shallow cordate at the base, lobed or with 1-3 teeth; the leaflets have petioles. Panicle large, generally more than 20 cm long; bracts and bracteoles linear; pedicel thin, 0.8-1.3 cm long; sepals 4, red or lavender, oblong or elliptic, 7-10 mm long, without petals; stamens about 20-32, filamentous; pistils 6-10, stigma nearly spherical. Achenes with long stalks, obliquely obovate, 0.8-1.2 cm long, 3 longitudinal veins on each side, wings along ventral and dorsal sutures, style persistent. The flowering and fruiting period is from July to September.
It grows in wet places near rivers, shrubs or mountain forests. It is distributed in Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet.

[herb] rhizome is short, about one finger thick, brown, surrounded by Brown fibrous sheath. The fibrous roots are tufted, slender and brown in appearance; the xylem of the section is light yellow. It tastes bitter.
