Perennial herbs, about 1 meter high. The rhizome is short and thick, with layers of brown skin like fiber coating. The fibrous roots are cylindrical, yellowish white and slightly thickened. Leaves many basal, long elliptic lanceolate, about 30 cm long, 5-6 cm wide, apex acute, base gradually narrow, more or less amplexicaul. Panicle terminal, less branched, rachis densely grayish brown puberulent; flowers greenish white, perianth segments 6. Capsule triangular ovate, ca. 1. 5 cm long, 3-lobed. Seeds numerous, yellowish brown. It blooms in autumn.

It grows in the moist and fertile place under the hillside grassland, shrub or sparse forest. It is distributed in Yunnan, Guizhou and other places.

The root of the same genus Veratrum angustifolia is the same as this product in Yunnan. Its morphological characteristics are as follows: leaf width is 1.5-2 cm, inflorescence axis is close to glabrous, bracts of flowers are prominent, 3 cm long.

[pharmacological action] the root extract of Pennisetum (unidentified species) from Yunnan Province has analgesic effect on mice by subcutaneous injection, and the analgesic rate of alkaloid part is lower than that of morphine, but higher than that of codeine. In rabbits (corneal reflex analgesia), alkaloids (extracted with pentanol) were as effective as morphine, but stronger than tetrahydropalmatine. The glycosides have some cardiotonic effects on isolated toad heart.
