[plant morphology] Vitex negundo (Guangzhi), also known as Chu (the book of songs), Vitex negundo (Guangya), Puxiang, wushicao, tuchaihu, mosiechai, shanjingmu, tuchangshan, naidan, yeniuxi, bujingcao and mosiegrass.

Deciduous shrubs or small trees. It is 5 meters high, branched and fragrant. New branches tetragonal, densely hairy. The leaves are opposite, with trilobal whorls between them; palmate 5-compound leaves, with 3-compound leaves between the ends of branches; the middle 3-leaflets are lanceolate, 6-10 cm long and 2-3 cm wide, cuneate at the base, long pointed at the apex and coarsely serrated at the edge; they are green on both sides, with slight oil spots, short hairs along the veins on both sides, and dense hairs on the back of tender leaves; the leaflets on both sides are ovate, 1 / 4-2 / 4 of the middle leaflet; the total petiole is 3 cm long 6 cm, densely covered with yellow hairs. Panicle terminal or lateral, 30 cm long, densely covered with powdery fine hairs; bract small, linear, hairy, inserted at the base of pedicel; calyx bell shaped, upper 5-lobed; corolla lavender, about 6 mm long or slightly long, outer fine hairs dense, upper 2-lobed, upper 2-lobed, lower 3-lobed; stamens 4, 2-strong, protruding flower tube; ovary spherical, stigma 2-lobed. Berry black, persistent calyx covered more than half. The flowering period is from July to August.

It is distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Guangxi and Guizhou.

[collection] from August to September, the fruits were harvested when they were ripe, dried in the sun, removed the dust and impurities, and stored in a dry place.

[medicinal materials] the dried fruit is pear shaped or ovoid, 3-4 mm long, 2-3 mm in diameter, brown, with a short pointed base, a truncated top, and a dent in style abscission. The surface is smooth, or there are no obvious longitudinal lines. The calyx tube has 5 teeth at the top, 5 obvious ribs on the outside, and dense branches with grayish white short hairs. The shell is hard with several yellow white seeds. Weak breath, weak taste.

[pharmacological action] 25% of the decoction has the effect of anti Staphylococcus aureus in vitro, but has weak inhibition on Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

[clinical application] treatment of cough and asthma in children

22 cases of cough and asthma caused by persistent tracheitis and 36 cases of cough caused by upper respiratory tract infection in children were observed. Results within 3-4 days, 18 cases and 23 cases of cough and asthma disappeared, 3 cases and 7 cases of cough and asthma were significantly relieved, and the rest were ineffective. Among them, 11 cases had complications, 9 cases were cured and 2 cases were invalid. It is still effective for recurrent cases, but it is not effective for acute stage. During the treatment, some of the children sweated slightly after taking the medicine, and the rest had no side effects. Usage: 1.5 liang of Vitex negundo (leaves and seeds), decoct with water into 100 ml, add sugar, take 3 times a day, 10 ml each time.
