[plant morphology] Panax notoginseng

Perennial herbs, 10-20 cm high. The root tuber is hypertrophic, fusiform to subglobose, with brown outer skin. The stem is much branched, and the branches are angular, densely covered with sparse Brown villi. Leaves alternate, oblong or linear oblong, 1.5-4 cm long, 6-7 mm wide, apex obtuse or acute, pointed, base rounded or cuneate, sparsely pilose above, densely white pilose below, petiole 1 mm long, densely hairy: stipules linear. Flowers yellow, solitary in leaf axils; calyx cup-shaped, calyx teeth lanceolate, densely rusty villous; corolla abaxially sparsely silky pubescent. Pods oblong, apex with short beak, densely rusty villous. Seeds purple black, kidney shaped. The flowering period is June.

On shady hillsides or in pine forests. It is distributed in Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet.
