[plant morphology] Ludou tree, also known as luduole, longbangu, Langgu, Longjiao, Lujian, Ronglan, Lintou, lincha, Lvgu, shanshengu.

Shrubs or small trees, erect, branched, with aerial prop roots. The leaves are leathery, linear lanceolate, 1.5 m long and 3-5 cm wide, with long caudate apex, sharp spines on the middle rib of leaf margin and back, and the spines are forward. It is dioecious; white flowers, densely fleshy spikes, terminal; flowers without perianth; male inflorescence slightly lateral, with rich fragrance, about 50 cm long, spatholoid bracts lanceolate, stamens many, in punctate clusters, filaments partly united, very long, anthers linear, apex awned; female anther carpel, forming group, ovary 2-locular, ovule 1, near basal. The aggregate fruit is elliptic or globular elliptic, up to 20 cm long, composed of 50-70 or more drupes. The drupe is 4-6 cm long, yellowish red at maturity, oblong, slightly angular. The seed is small with fleshy endosperm and tiny embryo. The flowering period is August and the fruiting period is September to October.
