[plant morphology] Taiwan lettuce
Annual or biennial herbs, 80-120 cm high. All contain white milk. Several taproots, conical. Stem simple, erect, cylindrical, sparsely long hairy, upper part much branched. Leaves alternate, usually sessile, lanceolate or oblong lanceolate, 7-10 cm long and 3-5 cm wide, pinnately divided, lobes margin dentate, apex lobes larger, lobes on both sides slightly downward, apex sharp or acuminate, or blunt, base auricular amplexicaul, ear margin serrate, green above, light green below, long hairs on main vein. Inflorescence terminal, arranged into a panicle, involucre cylindrical; bracts imbricate arrangement, inner bracts lanceolate, longer, outer bracts short; flowers pale yellow, all tongue shaped; stamens 5, attached to corolla tube; ovary inferior, style slender, stigma 2-lobed. Achene ovoid, flat, black, apex beaked, corolla white, soft. The flowering period is from May to September.
Born on the roadside and in the wilderness. It is distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Hubei, Sichuan, Jiangxi, Hunan, Fujian and Taiwan.
