The length of the body is about 20 cm, the ventral surface is straight, the posterior part of the body is flat, and the caudal peduncle is slender. The head is large and flat, the snout is short, blunt, not protruding, and the upper and lower jaw are slightly equal. The mouth is large and inferior. There are villous tooth bands on both jaws and operculum. The eye is small, lateral, and the distance between eyes is raised. There are 4 pairs of whiskers, one pair of nasal whiskers can reach behind the eyes, one pair of maxillary whiskers can reach the base of pectoral fin, and two pairs of Yi whiskers, which are shorter than maxillary whiskers. The branchial foramen are large. All of them are naked without scales. The side line is complete. The dorsal fin I, 6-7, is located at the posterior superior part of the pectoral fin and the anterior superior part of the abdominal fin. There are 36-47 anterior and 11-16 posterior edges of the pectoral fin. The anal fin is 21-25. The end of fat fin is free and shorter than that of gluteal fin. The caudal fin bifurcates. The body is yellow; the back is dark brown, with wide and long black stripes on the side; the abdomen is light yellow, with black longitudinal stripes on the upper and lower leaves of caudal fin.

It lives in rivers and lakes. It lives at the bottom of the lake during the day and floats on the surface at night. The spawning period is generally from April to May. It is distributed in the Yangtze River, Yellow River, Pearl River and Heilongjiang river basins.
