[plant morphology] jute, also known as Luoma, niuniti, sanzhucao and tianzisu.
Annual herb, 1-2m high, glabrous. Leaves ovate lanceolate or lanceolate, 5-12 cm long and 2-5 cm wide, base rounded, apex acuminate, margin coarsely serrate, the lowest 2 teeth elongate into caudate lobes; petiole 1-3.5 cm long; stipules linear, about 5-8 mm long. Flowers small, several in leaf pus, pedicel very short; sepals 5, lavender; petals 5, yellow; stamens numerous, ovary 5-locular. Capsule globose, about 1 cm in diameter, without beak at the top, with longitudinal ribs, wrinkles and verrucous processes, 5-valved at maturity. It blooms in summer. The fruit period is from October to November.
Native to Southeast Asia; widely cultivated in southern provinces of China.

[chemical constituents] the leaves contain jute glycoside, cyanidin monosaccharide, β - sitosterol, β - sitosterol D-glucoside, and bitter jute ketone, jute alcohol and jute glucoside. Jute glucoside is the glucoside of jute aglycone. In addition, it contains 0.4% KCl and a small amount of glucose, galactose and arabinose.
The skin contains petuniacin monosaccharide and cyanidin monosaccharide.
