[plant morphology] Cotinus coggygria
Deciduous shrubs or trees, up to 8 m in height. Leaves simple, alternate, obovate, 3-8 cm long, 2.5-6 cm wide, apex rounded or slightly concave, base rounded or broadly cuneate, entire, glabrous or pubescent only on inferior veins, lateral veins 6-11 pairs, apex often forked; petiole thin, 1.5 cm long. Inflorescence terminal; flowers heterozygous, ca. 3 mm in diameter; sepals 5, lanceolate; petals 5, oblong, as long as sepals; stamens 5, shorter than petals; ovary superior, with 2-3 short lateral styles. The ear is 5-20 cm long, with many slender pedicels of sterile flowers, which are purple green and feathery. Drupe reniform, 3-4 mm in diam., red when ripe. The flowering period is April. The fruit period is June.
It is often found on sunny hillsides. It is distributed in North China, Southwest China, Zhejiang, Shaanxi and other places.
