[synonyms] houzizao, yangchangzao, houdan, shenzao.

[source] it is a stone from the viscera of rhesus monkey. For animal morphology, please refer to "macaque bone".

[medicinal material] it is oval in shape, slightly lateral and jujube in shape. The big one is like chicken egg, the small one is just like soya bean, and generally as big as lotus seed. The surface is bronze or green black, smooth and glossy. It's hard and brittle, and it's fragile when struck; its cross section is grayish yellow, with layers and core in the center. It's slightly fragrant, slightly bitter and astringent, and has a sandy taste. It is better to be big, dark and crisp.
