Evergreen trees, 7-15m high. Bark grayish brown; branchlets glabrous. Single leaf alternate; ovate lanceolate to nearly elliptic, 12-20 cm long, 5-8 cm wide, apex acuminate, apex cuneate, base cuneate, entire, with grayish white scales below, glabrous; petiole 1.5-2 cm long. Female inflorescence usually terminal, 15-20 cm long. The inflorescence is 22-25 cm long, with dense fruits; 3-5 putamen are united, with short stalks or few sessile, shallowly discoid, enclosing the base of nut, 7-13 mm in diameter, 2-4 mm in height; bracts triangular, adnate to putamen, arranged in rings. Nut chestnut, ovate, 1-1.5 cm in diameter, 1.2-1.6 cm in length, base round, only the center and cupule healed; navel deep.
It grows best in warm mountains and valleys with moist and fertile soil. It is distributed all over the south of the Yangtze River.
