Small evergreen trees, usually up to 8 m tall. Branchlets dark brown, glabrous. Leaves alternate, obovate elliptic, 12-24 cm long, 3.5-7 cm wide, apex acuminate, base cuneate, entire, nearly leathery, dark green above, glabrous below, pale white below, first covered with silvery white sericeous hairs, then gradually falling off, 14-20 pairs of lateral veins; petiole 1-3 cm long, with shallow grooves above. Panicles in axils of new branches; flowers bisexual, pedicel 5-7 mm long; perianth 6-lobed, lobes oblong, about 6 mm long; stamens 9, anthers 4, locular; pistil 1, style slender. Berry globose, ca. 1 cm in diam., with persistent perianth, outside densely sericeous. The flowering period is from April to May. The fruit period is from June to September.
Born in hillside, valley and stream side mixed forest. Distributed in Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei and other places.
