[plant morphology] Camellia
Evergreen shrubs or small trees, up to 15 meters high, glabrous and smooth. Leaves alternate, leathery, ovate to elliptic, 5-10 cm long and 3-4 cm wide, apex obtuse, base rounded to broadly cuneate, margin crenulate, dark green above, glossy below, both sides smooth and glabrous; petiole ca. 5 mm long. Flowers solitary in leaf axils or terminal, red, 6-8 cm in diameter, nearly sessile; calyx 5, green; petals 5-7, nearly round; stamens numerous, 2-whorled; pistil 1, ovary oblong, smooth, glabrous. Capsule globose. Ventricles dehiscent, ca. 3 cm in diam., glabrous and smooth. Seeds Subelliptic, dorsally angular, ca. 2 cm long, 1. 5 cm in diam. The flowering period is from April to May. The fruit period is from September to October.
It is cultivated in most areas of China.
