Herbaceous perennial, slightly pilose or subglabrous, with weak stems, creeping on the ground, 20-60 cm long; leaves, calyx and corolla with punctate and striped black glands. The root is slender, light yellow; the stem is twisted, dark reddish brown, with many longitudinal grooves on the surface, about 1 mm in diameter, glabrous; the outer ring of the section is dark brown, and the center is light yellow; there are fibrous roots at the lower stem node. The leaves are opposite, mostly shrunken, ovate or heart-shaped, with one main vein protruding below and no lateral veins, brownish green above and shallow below, brittle and fragile. After soaking in water, black short stripes can be seen. Flowers and fruits are generally absent. It is slightly fragrant, light and acid in taste.
It is mainly produced in Sichuan; in addition, it is also produced in Jiangsu, Guangxi, Zhejiang and Hunan.
