[plant morphology] Solanum nigrum

Annual erect herbs, branched, glaucous or subglaucous, ca. 1 m tall. The stem is slender and green. Leaves simple, alternate, ovate to oblong, 4-8 cm long, apex acuminate, base mucronate. Margin subentire, or irregularly angular coarsely toothed, thin, dark green above, with dots, pale green below, veins raised on the back of leaves; petiole slender, ca. 1 cm long. Peduncle axillary, 1-2.5cm long, slender; flowers 2-5, arranged in umbels; calyx green, 5-lobed, lobes ovate; corolla white, 6-8mm in diameter; stamens 5, inserted on the crown throat, anthers fused into a cone, apically split; ovary 2-locular, ovules numerous. Fruit globose fleshy, about 5 mm in diameter, green when young, black when mature. It blooms in summer and autumn.

It is distributed all over the south of China.
