Perennial herbs, 20-30 cm high. The root is cylindrical, fleshy, with brown outer skin and yellowish inner surface. Single leaf alternate, often dense, linear, 8-15 cm long, 1-2 cm wide, apex obtuse, base gradually narrowed or sheathed, margin with bristles, lateral veins parallel. Flowers purplish red, lip shaped, about 3 cm long, densely whorled, arranged in spikes, often drooping; bracts broad, leaflike, margin spiny.
Most of them live in mountains and forests. It is distributed in Yunnan and other places.
The root of the same plant is also used as medicine.
