When she was still reading, Liu Qiong had a great interest in movies. In Shanghai law school, he and other students jointly set up the "spring and autumn drama club". Although he studied law, Liu Qiong joined Lianhua after Jin Yan's introduction before she graduated from the university because of her great love for movies.

In the same year, he joined Lianhua film company as an actor, and successively shot such films as "the road", "the little angel", "the lost lamb", "the story of Langshan's blood", "Lianhua Symphony · stranger", "free world", "Yihai scenery · Movie City" and so on.

After the "August 13" incident in 1937, he went to Hong Kong and soon returned to Shanghai. During this period, he once performed in drama such as Wen Tianxiang.

In 1938, he played XiMenqing in Wusong and Pan Jinlian, which was shot by Xinhua film company. His elegant temperament made XiMenqing vivid and impressive. From then on, he began to play the leading role.

From 1938 to 1941, he made more than ten films in Xinhua, Huaxin and Huacheng, such as "Li hen Tian", "gold and silver world", "Du Shi Niang", "gone with the wind" and "parting between life and death". In "gold and silver world", Zhang Bonan, who he plays, has laid an important position for him as a young man in the film world. His subsequent film "life and death" made him even more popular in the film world. Later, he starred in such films as Wen Su Chen, home, wedding night and so on.

In 1942, he starred in "Madame Butterfly" and other films in China United productions Co., Ltd. In 1943, he joined the Shanghai drama club, and later transferred to Tianfeng and other drama clubs, starring in drama "song of everlasting regret", "Cai Songpo", "hero of the sea - Zheng Chenggong" and other dramas.

In 1952, he was deported by the Hong Kong authorities for taking part in patriotic activities and returned to Shanghai as an actor in Shanghai Film Studio. He has played the leading role or important role in such films as soul of the sea, No.5 women's basketball team, horse herder, death and girl, and dream is not a dream.

After 1956, he also served as a director. His films include female Fuma, master Qiao's sedan chair, No. 51 military station, Ashima, Li huiniang (Peking Opera), etc. Among them, "Ashima" is an excellent minority film, which won the best dance film award at the third international music and dance film week hosted by Spain in 1982. Li huiniang won the excellent film award of the Ministry of culture in 1981. Liu Qiong was the director of the studio of Shanghai Film Studio and the third and fourth directors of China Film Association.

In the early hours of April 28, 2002, he died of lung cancer in Shanghai at the age of 89.
