essential information
Early experience
Yang Wei was born with congenital malnutrition. He was only 3.25 kg at birth. He was thinner than his peers all the time. His arms were long, but the length and strength of his legs were insufficient.
In 1985, five-year-old Yang Wei went to Xiantao Xinsheng Street Primary School to enroll in preschool. He happened to meet Peng Youping, coach of Xiantao amateur sports school, who came to recruit students. Soon, Yang Wei was selected because of his strong upper limbs. Yang Wei's leg shape is not good and is not favored by everyone, but coach Peng Youping insists on his own view and makes a training plan for him. When Yang Wei went to gymnastics school, he was very conscious and never came late or left early. Once, when Peng Youping led the children to practice the horizontal bar, he inadvertently found blood stains on the iron bar. He opened Yang Wei's clenched fist and saw that the palms of his worn hands were bleeding. Yang Wei's legs are not good. When he was 10 years old, Yang Wei still had thin arms and legs, and his knees were relatively large. His legs could not be stretched straight. They were X-shaped (commonly known as "outer eight characters") from the front and arched from the side. When he stood on his head, his leg movement was not beautiful at all. Peng Youping designed a "legging plastic method" for Yang Wei, which connected Yang Wei to his bachelor dormitory and tied Yang Wei's legs with gauze before going to bed every day, Sometimes he put heavy things on him. When he got up the next morning, Yang Wei's legs were numb. Peng Youping massaged him for half an hour before he could walk. After some training, Yang Wei's level has greatly improved.
In 1990, Xiantao gymnastic school recommended him to Hubei gymnastic team, but the provincial gymnastic team didn't like him because of his poor leg shape and large knee joint. However, Ding Jie, the coach of competitive gymnastic team of Wuhan Institute of physical education, appreciated him very much. He thought that he had stable mentality and had the potential of being an excellent gymnast, so Yang Wei became a student of Wuhan Institute of physical education. After Ding Jie moved to the United States, Yang Wei learned from Yao Jiqing, Sun Wei and others. In 1992, Yang Wei won five championships in the National Junior gymnastics competition.
