Ma Ji, formerly known as Ma Shuhuai, was born on August 2, 1934 in the home of an ordinary businessman in Beijing. When he was in primary school, he sold ice nuclei to supplement his family. Because Chang Lianan's relative is a classmate, when he was young, he often went to the Qiming tea house of Chang's family to enjoy free cross talk with an ice core basket under his arm. He returned to Peide middle school in 1950. In 1951, he was admitted to North China Publishing House of Beijing Xinhua Bookstore and became a bookseller. In his spare time, he almost devoted himself to speaking cross talk and singing Beijing opera. In 1954, he thought that his level was already good. He wrote a "cross talk" called "great motherland" and took part in the artistic performance of Beijing light industry trade union. However, the content was too immature and shallow, and failed. In 1955, with a certain improvement in cross talk performance, he began to get involved in performing traditional cross talk. After his stage performance "Yellow Crane Tower" was criticized, he began to use his business time to visit his teachers and friends, and joined the amateur art troupe taught by Liu Baorui and Guo Quanbao. in 1987, Ma Ji got acute myocardial infarction in Changsha. He was hospitalized for three months before he was discharged.
