"Dragon lantern" is a popular name for dragon dance in Pudong area of Shanghai in the old days. It often appears in festivals and folk sacrificial activities such as praying for rain, disaster, God, peace and so on. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, dragon dance was popular in Pudong area. The traditional forms of dragon dance included cloth dragon, gauze dragon, grass dragon, fragrant fire dragon, little white dragon, Youhua dragon, etc. The local dragon dance teams are mainly distributed in villages and towns, clans and some guilds. The most famous dragon dance team is composed of a group of "tiaohangkou" guilds (i.e. porters and loaders) in Sanlin Town.
