Yi (Sani) embroidery is also known as "Sani cross stitch", which is called "nawo" in Yi language. It is a kind of folk embroidery art popular in the Sani community of Yi branch in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Yunnan Province. It is said that the Yi (Sani) embroidery originated in the Tang and Song Dynasties and matured in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It plays a very important role in the daily life of Sani people. Sani women have learned embroidery since they were young, and all of them are skillful. After generations of inheritance and continuous development, Sani embroidery art is improving. Sani embroidery is based on the warp and weft of the cloth pattern. The pattern is composed of oblique cross needles. It has a variety of techniques, such as single picking, double picking, plain picking, color picking and so on. The embroidered products include backpacks, tablecloths, curtains, flower wrap, flower waist, dress lace and other daily necessities. Sani embroidery has fine stitches, exquisite workmanship, ingenious design, well-organized and bright colors, which fully shows Sani people's intelligence and artistic creativity, with distinctive national style and local characteristics.
