Introduction to wood carving (Jianchuan wood carving)
Applicant: Jianchuan County, Yunnan Province
Jianchuan wood carving has a history of more than 1000 years, with strong local ethnic characteristics. According to historical records, in the Tang Dynasty, the carpenters in Jianchuan undertook the production of wood carving components of the Wuhua Building in Nanzhao; in the Song Dynasty, some wood carving artists in Jianchuan came to Beijing to perform, which made a sensation in Beijing. Zhang Hong, a scholar of the Qing Dynasty, wrote in his new language of Southern Yunnan: "in more than 70 counties of Yunnan and the neighboring provinces of Sichuan, Guizhou and Guangxi, those who are good at chiseling with axes are sword people everywhere." It can be seen that there were many woodcarvers in Jianchuan at that time, and they spread widely.
After the founding of the people's Republic of China, Jianchuan wood carving has a great development. Jianchuan wood carvings are decorated in the Great Hall of the people, national culture palace and other important buildings in the capital. Now, it has developed into six categories, including stone inlaid wood carving furniture, craft hanging screen and seat screen series, lattice door series, ancient architecture and interior decoration, tourist handicraft pieces, and modern furniture, with more than 260 varieties. It is a traditional cultural product with artistic value, ornamental value, collection value and practical value.
Jianchuan woodcarving fully demonstrates the high artistic level and cultural conservation of the Bai people. It combines the original rough and bold style with the exquisite and exquisite Woodcarving in the south of the Yangtze River, becoming one of the important schools of Woodcarving in China.
Jianchuan woodcarving has a profound traditional culture in its living space. There are not only the "Carpenter's ancestor Lu Ban Hui" which is still popular today, but also the most numerous and widely spread carpenter's stories, carpenter's ballads, narrative poems and so on, which are of great value to the study of Bai's history and craft development.
