Tongwei Xiaoqu opera is a kind of Qupai folk opera popular in Tongwei County, Gansu Province. It was developed and formed on the basis of Ming and Qing time tunes and Northern and southern folk songs. In the process of spreading, it formed a unique regional style due to the "misuse of local language".

Tongwei Xiaoqu opera is sung in Tongwei dialect. The lyrics are easy to understand, the plot is simple and full of local flavor. It has a strong affinity in the local society, so it is widely spread. Tongwei Xiaoqu opera has a large number of tunes, including 126 tunes and 26 instrumental tunes. Its singing form can be divided into two kinds: one is Qingqu Qingchang, no accompaniment, self entertainment; the other is opera performance, according to the script branch as the role, disguised performance, story telling and emotion singing. Although the songs are the same, the former does not speak for the latter. Tongwei Xiaoqu opera has rich content of singing scripts. According to incomplete textual research, there are more than 100 singing plays spread among the people, and 72 scripts have been compiled into volumes, mainly including selling water, naoshuguan, mingyuelou, dingzhuan, jiajiajiagui, Xingyuan Hefan, dazzling persuasion, Wang xiangwobing, brother and sister watching lanterns, etc.

With the rapid impact of economic globalization and the diversification of modern media, Tongwei Xiaoqu opera is on the verge of extinction. It is in urgent need of government support and effective protection measures.
