Shanshan Town, located in the center of Shanshan County, is the political, economic and cultural exchange center of Shanshan county. The town governs two administrative villages, one animal husbandry team, eight communities, one primary school, and more than 90 county level administrative, enterprises and institutions. Thinking of agricultural economic development in 2005, the work of urban agriculture and rural areas will focus on development, rely on the geographical advantages of cities and towns, steadily promote the pace of rural economic restructuring and industrialization, adhere to standardized pollution-free production, enhance the competitiveness of agricultural products, and accelerate the modernization of animal husbandry.

Wei Taiwu conquered Beiliang (439) and occupied the Huangshui River Valley. Zhixidu (now Xining, Qinghai), around Xiping and Taohe counties, governs Hehuang area in eastern Qinghai. In the second year of Xiaochang (526), Emperor Xiaoming abolished the town and changed it into Shanzhou.
