There are many places of interest in Donghu District, including famous buildings in the south of the Yangtze River, Tengwang Pavilion, Da'an temple, xinghualou, Zhonggulou, ningwang mansion, the site of Bayi Uprising and Bayi Square, Helong headquarters, yeting headquarters, Zhude military training regiment, etc.

Historical evolution
During the Northern Wei Dynasty, there was a record of the East Taihu Lake in the shuijingzhu written by Li Daoyuan.
Since Tang and Song Dynasties, it has been called East Lake.
Before Song Dynasty, it belonged to Nanchang County. In the sixth year of the Song Dynasty (981), it was divided into the northwest part of Nanchang County, where it was set up as a new county and then transformed into a new county.
In the Qing Dynasty, a part of the five gates in the old city of Nanchang - zhangjiangmen, Deshengmen, yonghemen, guangrunmen and shunhuamen, as well as three main streets (middle street, West Street and East Street) were under the jurisdiction.
In 1926, Nanchang was established as the first, second, third, fifth (part), seventh (part) and ninth district respectively.
In 1949, in the early days of liberation, it was divided into the first and second districts. The district was withdrawn in October of the same year.
In 1951, the first and second districts were restored.
In 1955, they were named Donghu District and Shengli district respectively.
In 1980, the two districts were merged and collectively referred to as Donghu District. It is named after the East Lake in the area.

In 1997, Donghu District governed 14 streets. They are: dongjiayao street, pengjiaqiao street, Gongyuan street, Zigu road street, Yuzhang street, BaiHuaZhou street, yangjiachang street, Shengli Road Street, Dayuan street, dunzitang street, tengwangge street, bayiqiao street, Qingshan road street, Shajing street. The district government is located at 26 Dieshan road.
On September 13, 2002, the streets of Zigu Road, yangjiachang and Shengli road were cancelled. At the end of 2002, Donghu District had jurisdiction over 11 streets, 127 neighborhood committees and one administrative village.
On September 7, 2004, the State Council approved the adjustment of some administrative divisions of Nanchang: Xichuan neighborhood committee of Chaoyang Zhou street, Xihu District, and Yonghe, Gongyuan, Xianhu, Yongxi, Changxiang, Qili villages of Tangshan town, Qingshanhu district were put under the jurisdiction of Donghu District. Eleven neighborhood committees, namely 187, Gaoxin, nandabei courtyard, Qingshanhu, xiejiacun, Xingguang, Shangfang Road, jiangdanan Road, nandanayuan, Nanchang water conservancy and Beijing East Road, and seven neighborhood committees, namely panfang, Dianhua, tangshanbei, tangshannan, Fangyuan 1, Fangyuan 2 and Fangyuan 3, are under the jurisdiction of Qingshanhu District. After the adjustment, Donghu District has 11 streets including dongjiayao, courtyard, park, BaiHuaZhou, dunzitang, Yuzhang, Bayi Bridge, tengwangge, Shajing, Qingshan road and pengjiaqiao.
By the end of 2004, the district had jurisdiction over 10 streets: dongjiayao, Dayuan, Gongyuan, BaiHuaZhou, dunzitang, Yuzhang, Bayi Bridge, tengwangge, Shajing, pengjiaqiao, etc. There are 79 communities, 27 family committees and 6 administrative villages (excluding Shajing Street).
In December 2019, the State Council approved the establishment of Honggutan District of Nanchang City, and put Shajing street and Weidong street of Donghu District of Nanchang City under the jurisdiction of Honggutan district.

Donghu District is located in the northeast of Nanchang city. From south to north, it is connected with Qingshanhu district along Hongdu North Avenue, West Bank of Qingshanhu, fudayoudi and South Branch of Ganjiang River.
