Mafang Xiang is located in the southeast of the area. It has a population of 18000, mainly Han nationality, as well as Hui, Tibetan, Tu and other nationalities. It covers an area of 25 square kilometers. It has jurisdiction over 11 village committees including Mafang, xixingyuan, Yanzhuang, Xiaoqiao, Maosheng temple, qijiacheng, Chaoyang, sitaizi, Beiyuan, Nanyuan and Xinmin. In 1949, it belonged to Sanqi township of Huangzhong County. In 1956, it belonged to Xining city. In 1961, it established Mafang commune. In 1984, it changed into Mafang township. In 1986, it belonged to Chengbei district.
