Rucun township is located in the east of Wutai County, with geziling in the west, four edged mountain in the north, Da'ao in the South and evil mountain in the East. The tourist highway leading to Wutai mountain runs through the whole area, with convenient transportation.
Rucun township is higher in the northwest and lower in the southeast, with an average altitude of 1190 meters, the highest altitude of 1600 meters and the lowest altitude of 850 meters.
With a total area of 166.73 square kilometers, Rucun Township governs 32 administrative villages and has a permanent population of 29888 (in 2017), which is the largest grain production area and main coal production area in Wutai County.

Rucun township government is 10 kilometers away from the county seat, adjacent to doucun town in the north, Chengguan town and Donglei Township in the west, gounan Township and Chenjiazhuang Township in the south, Jiangfang Township and gaohongkou Township in the East, 67 kilometers away from Wutai Mountain scenic spot, the first famous Buddhist mountain in China. It is suitable for planting corn, sorghum, beans, potatoes, millet and other crops with small number of days. The average temperature in the south is 8.5 ℃, and the frost free period is about 125 days. The difference of annual accumulated temperature and sunshine time is not obvious. The rainfall is normally lower than that in the north. It is suitable for planting dry fruit and corn and millet with large number of days.
